The City of Raleigh pools, and in particular Optimist Pool, has suffered a staff shortage. Optimist and other City of Raleigh pools open as much as they can. (Though needed maintenance has put a few of the pools out of commission until it's fixed) I'd recommend calling before you go for recreational swimming (as opposed to adult lap swim) as they adapt to changes like staffing and other variables daily. TL;DR there's sometimes a bit of a struggle with staffing or maintenance, but the people are friendly and work hard to provide the best service they can.

Great pool, although the swim team closes 3/4 of the lanes (they only leave 5 lanes open for the general public) every day during the school year from 3:30PM-7PM, meaning you basically can’t use this pool unless you go early in the morning, so I wouldn’t really call this a “public pool” since most working individuals don’t get off work before 3:30PM. Such a bummer that they allow the swim team to block off the majority of the pool every day.

By far, my favorite pool. I swam all over the world, Optimist Pool and its staff are simply amazing. They always greet you with a smile, accommodating, helpful, friendly. The pool is clean and spacious. My favorite is the summer season at the Optimist Pool as they open up the doors and you get a chance to see the outside, enjoy the fresh air and swim laps at the same time! Optimist is awesome!!!

Well run for a public pool. EDIT (5/10/21): I'll give some examples of why I'm happy. 1) Super friendly morning staff. 2) Attentive lifeguards. 3) Clean locker rooms. 4) And water facilities are rarely "down", for example, the heating and water temperatures are almost always perfect. Before the remodel in 2008, it was different. I won't get into the details since that's history. It is a job well done since then. Thank you for providing an affordable public facility that just works.

Everyone was kicked out of 12 foot deep end randomly at 4pm. If there is a lifeguard shortage (2022) then the Raleigh pools need to work that out. Paying customers should get to swim. I wanted my money back.

Just went here for the first time with my toddler and we loved it. The fact that the main pool is totally shaded is what made it AMAZING. (Toddler/wading pool isn't shaded, just to make that clear.) We went on a Wednesday afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all so that was nice. Floatation vests in all sizes are available for free use. I anticipate we'll be here often from now on.
